MASSACHUSETTS – Norfolk County District Attorney Michael Morrissey has announced he will not run for reelection, bringing an end to a long career in public service. Morrissey has served as Norfolk County DA since 2010 and previously spent more than three decades in the Massachusetts Legislature, first elected in 1977.

In a statement released Monday, Morrissey said he is ready to “start a new chapter,” though he did not provide additional details about his decision. His announcement comes amid heightened public scrutiny of his office following the high-profile Karen Read murder cases. One trial ended in a mistrial, while a second resulted in an acquittal, during which defense attorneys and observers raised questions about the conduct of some State Police troopers assigned to the case by the DA’s office.

Morrissey’s departure sets the stage for an open race for Norfolk County District Attorney, marking the first such contest in more than a decade.
