New Fare Gates Now Active at South Station as MBTA Cracks Down on Fare Evasion

BOSTON – MBTA riders using South Station will notice a major change as the agency’s new fare gates are now officially active. The MBTA says the gates were turned on in phases beginning yesterday, with all gates at South Station expected to be fully operational by Monday.

The new system is designed to reduce fare evasion. Riders must now tap or scan their fare media to both enter and exit the track area, and conductors will still check tickets onboard trains as usual.

There is one exception for New Year’s Eve: beginning at 8:00 p.m. tonight and continuing through the end of service, all MBTA rides will be free as part of the system’s annual holiday offering.
