Bellingham Fire Chief William Miller says a mulch fire that took more than five hours to contain on Sunday morning was likely caused by spontaneous combustion. The fire was reported around 8:40am Sunday at D&D Mulch and Landscape on Maple St in two 10,000-yard mulch piles. The Chief says more than a dozen other departments provided some form of mutual aid as the fire spread to nearby brush and consumed more than 6 acres on the warm, windy day. It was declared under control by 2pm. No one was hurt.
