Local Fines May Increase for Lake Quinsigamond Spills

By MyFM’s Claire Beverly – Local fines could be going up for spills into Lake Quinsigamond. A spill last month of about 193,300 gallons of untreated wastewater has prompted the Lake Commission to evaluate penalties. The Community Advocate reports based on the current rubric the City of Worcester may only be fined a maximum of $500 by the Commission, which may not be enough motivation to fix problems. The state issues larger fines – a 2022 spill of 5.75 million gallons led to a $13,000 hit – but they have not yet levied one for last month.
