HOPKINTON – The Hopkinton Trails Committee is recommending a new speed limit for bicycles on the town’s shared-use trails.

At its meeting this week, the committee voted unanimously to suggest that the Select Board adopt a 10 mph speed limit for both traditional and electric bicycles.

According to the Hopkinton Independent, a letter from the committee to the Select Board says the proposed limit is intended to promote “responsible use” of the trails. The committee also raised concerns that certain e-bike use has been cutting ruts into the paths, which could eventually lead to stormwater runoff erosion.
