HOPKINTON – Hopkinton Police have officially brought back their K-9 Unit, marking the department’s first police dog in several years.

According to the Hopkinton Independent, the unit was made possible after an officer took the initiative to secure a grant to cover the cost of acquiring and training a K-9. Officer Nick Walker has been training with K-9 Kobe since August and the pair are now operational.

Kobe is currently certified in building searches, area searches, and tracking. Over the summer, he is expected to continue training with a focus on narcotics detection.

Police officials say the return of a K-9 unit enhances public safety and provides officers with an additional resource for locating suspects, missing persons, and evidence.
