Hopkinton, MA – With spring officially beginning this week, the Hopkinton Health Department is already gearing up for mosquito and tick season, as warmer temperatures bring increased activity from these pests.

At Monday’s Hopkinton Board of Health meeting, Health Director Shaun McAuliffe warned that as temperatures rise above 40 degrees, tick activity will begin to increase. Residents are encouraged to take precautions when spending time outdoors.

According to the Hopkinton Independent, the Central Massachusetts Mosquito Control Project will soon launch its seasonal program to curb mosquito populations. This includes using helicopter applications of organic fungal pellets in targeted areas such as stagnant ponds, Saddle Hill, and Cedar Swamp. These treatments aim to eliminate mosquito larvae before they mature, reducing the overall mosquito population and minimizing the risk of mosquito-borne illnesses.

As tick and mosquito season ramps up, local health officials advise residents to take protective measures, such as using insect repellent, wearing long clothing in wooded areas, and regularly checking for ticks after outdoor activities.
