By MyFM’s Claire Beverly – A first grader from Hopkinton has won a national competitive chess title. The Hopkinton Independent reports 7-year-old Devansh Vellanki has won the 2024 U.S. Chess Federation National Elementary Championship, beating out about 140 other kids in his age group at the four-day tournament held last month in Columbus, Ohio. His parents tell the paper that in March he competed in an open tournament in Connecticut in which he beat out several adults, going undefeated in his rating category against 30–50-year-olds.
