HOPKINTON – Officials from Hopkinton have approved the Boston Marathon permit for this year’s race, and several updates are planned for the start.

Town leaders say the race will now begin in six waves instead of four to help reduce congestion at the starting line. Runners will also follow a new route from the Hopkinton High School and Middle School complex to the start, using Maple Street and Church Street.

Safety officials have also expanded emergency evacuation plans as part of race preparations.
