By MyFM’s Marissa Santos – The Holliston Police and Fire departments have transitioned their dispatching duties to the Holbrook Regional Emergency Communications Center. Despite the change, Police Chief Matthew Stone assures residents that there will be no noticeable difference in services. The decision to join the regional dispatch center was based on a 2022 study identifying Holliston as a suitable candidate. The Holbrook center, one of the oldest in the state, already dispatches for Sherborn.
Funded by a $5 million State 911 Department grant, the transition allows Holliston to save approximately $500,000 in each of the first three years, eliminating five civilian positions and hiring three new officers. The grant covers all costs for the first three years, with the town gradually assuming a percentage in subsequent years. The move is expected to enhance efficiency and reduce overtime costs.
Holbrook Regional Center dispatches for 21 agencies and has over 30 dispatchers. The grant will also facilitate infrastructure upgrades, including a new radio tower, handheld radios, and computers for cruisers. Despite the physical distance (Holbrook is nearly 30 miles away), Stone emphasizes that advanced technology ensures seamless operations and access to the same information as before. Overall, the transition has been smooth, with some adjustments and a learning curve.
