FRANKLIN, MA (May 28, 2025) – In a milestone celebration of compassion, creativity, and community spirit, the Franklin High School Empty Bowls Club, in partnership with the Franklin Food Pantry, held its 10th Annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser on Thursday, May 22, 2025. The event raised over $17,000 to support local families facing food insecurity.
Under the guidance of Franklin High School teacher Brenna Johnson, the student-led club has empowered youth to use their artistic talents to raise awareness of hunger in the community. This year’s event welcomed approximately 200 attendees to Franklin High School, where each guest received a hand-crafted ceramic bowl made by students—symbolizing the event’s powerful reminder: “Somewhere, someone’s bowl is empty.”
Guests enjoyed a simple supper of soup and bread, participated in a silent auction featuring original artwork, and enjoyed live music from The Zajac Brothers, as well as face painting and a selfie booth.
“The 10th anniversary of the Empty Bowls fundraiser is a testament to the enduring partnership between the Franklin Food Pantry and the Franklin High School Empty Bowls Club,” said Tina Powderly, Executive Director of the Franklin Food Pantry. “This student-driven event has raised more than $109,000 over the past decade and reflects the incredible heart and values of our community. We are deeply grateful for their ongoing support.”
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of the newly renamed Richard J. Johnson Empty Bowls Scholarships, honoring the father of Brenna Johnson. Two $500 scholarships were awarded to graduating seniors Isabella Kabat and Cleo St. Vrain Lary. Brenna Johnson was also formally recognized for her dedication to service with special honors from State Representative Jeff Roy and the Massachusetts Legislature.
The success of the fundraiser was made possible through the generous support of numerous sponsors, including: Allegra Marketing, Print, and Mail; School of Rock Franklin; Franklin Cultural Council; Next9Up; b. LUXE; Eagle Stainless Tube and Fabrication; Fenton Financial Group; Franklin Matters; Mount Street Farm; QRGA Certified Public Accountants; Advanced European Auto Repair; All Around Gymnastics Academy; and several local families and businesses.
