By MyFM’s Marissa Santos – The City Charter Review Committee is currently exploring the possibility of expanding the Framingham City Council by adding two at-large members, which would potentially increase the total number of councilors to 13. Residents were recently invited to participate in a poll released by the committee, seeking their opinions on various alternatives. Options presented include maintaining the current 11-member council, creating a 12-member council with additional representatives for larger sections, or establishing a 13-member council with at-large seats.
The committee emphasizes the significance of gathering community input to shape the size and composition of the City Council, addressing concerns that emerged during outreach with residents. One proposal in the survey suggests a 12-member council, including three regional at-large members. While an even-numbered council may result in tie votes, proponents argue that it would only require seven votes to pass a resolution.
Scheduled to discuss the survey responses on January 11, the Charter Review Committee has set a deadline of January 8 for residents to submit their opinions. If the committee recommends any changes to the charter, such as a reorganization of the City Council, the proposed alterations would be subject to approval in a future citywide election.
