BROCKTON — A former driving school owner at the center of the Brockton RMV bribery scandal has been sentenced, and the outcome is raising eyebrows.

Carlos Cardoso, who pleaded guilty to bribing a state driving examiner to falsify road tests and issue driver’s licenses, received a sentence of time served — just one day — along with two years of supervised release, six months of home confinement, and a $5,500 fine.

Federal prosecutors said the scheme involved more than $20,000 in bribes in exchange for handing out licenses to individuals who did not legitimately pass their road tests.

Court documents indicate the relatively light sentence was influenced by serious health complications Cardoso has faced since a violent assault in 2022.

The case was part of a broader investigation into corruption at the Brockton RMV, where multiple individuals were charged in connection with falsified testing and improper issuance of licenses.
