HOPEDALE — Town officials say a recently discovered $300,000 discrepancy in municipal finances was not caused by theft but by long-term procedural issues.
Town Administrator Mitch Ruscitti said in a statement Wednesday that the deficit was uncovered while closing out the fiscal year 2025 books for the Police Detail revolving account. A professional review determined the discrepancy resulted from several breakdowns in financial controls over multiple years.
Officials say the issues included checks that were never cashed and receipts that were never properly recorded.
