MASSACHUSETTS – Lawmakers are moving closer to banning cell phones in public schools.

The state Senate has overwhelmingly approved a bill that would prohibit the use of phones, tablets, and smartwatches during school hours beginning in the 2026–2027 school year.

Exceptions would be made for students with medical needs or special education requirements.

Supporters of the bill, including Governor Maura Healey, say the measure will cut down on distractions and improve learning. The proposal now heads to the House for consideration.
