MEDWAY — A man who claimed there was someone with a gun, prompting a police search and three school lockdowns Tuesday afternoon, has been detained and hospitalized for a mental health evaluation. Medway Police say there was never any actual gun threat.
Police say they found the man outside Shaw’s Plaza waving a shovel, which he described as being for self-defense, and claiming he had been threatened by another man with a gun. Officers conducted a search of the area for a possible gunman, but surveillance video later confirmed the man with the shovel had been alone the entire time. After that determination, police took the man to mental health professionals for evaluation.
