Costco Lease Signed, But Zoning Challenge Still Looms in Southborough

SOUTHBOROUGH – Southborough is moving one step closer to landing a Costco, but the project is not quite a done deal yet.

According to the Community Advocate, Costco has reportedly signed a lease agreement with the developer that owns the property on Coslin Drive, a site that straddles the Southborough and Westborough town line near Route 9 and Interstate 495. The lease signals a major milestone for the long-discussed project and suggests the retailer is serious about building at the location.

However, there is still a hurdle to clear. After Southborough voters approved a zoning change at the October Town Meeting to allow the Costco development, a resident filed a formal challenge. That appeal is now under review by the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, which must determine whether the zoning change complies with state law.

Until the Attorney General issues a decision, the project cannot fully move forward. Town officials and residents alike are now waiting to see whether the zoning approval will stand, clearing the final major obstacle for Costco’s arrival.
