Citizen Petition Signature Requirement Change Heads to State Legislature

WESTBOROUGH – A recent change approved by Westborough voters will now go before the state legislature for final authorization. At last month’s Special Town Meeting, residents passed an article increasing the number of signatures required for a citizen’s petition to appear on the Annual Town Meeting warrant from 10 to 50.

Because the adjustment modifies the town charter, it must also receive approval from the state legislature before taking effect.

According to the Community Advocate, the proposal was brought forward by residents who felt that too many “frivolous” petitions were making their way onto Town Meeting warrants, prompting the push for a higher threshold.
