Varney and McGovern Silence Framingham in 1–0 Victory

The Nipmuc Warriors baseball team eked out a 1–0 win over Framingham last Friday in a classic pitchers’ duel. Starter Nate Varney fired 4.1 scoreless innings, scattering just two hits and fanning two batters. Varney’s mix of off-speed pitches and fastball command kept Framingham’s lineup off balance through his outing. After Varney was pulled, Cole McGovern entered in relief and preserved the shutout, yielding only a single hit while striking out two more batters to close out the game. McGovern’s steadiness under pressure capped a combined nine-inning gem that stifled Framingham’s offense. Offensively, Nipmuc manufactured its lone run in the bottom of the second. Josh Desmond ripped a clutch single to left field, bringing home the game’s only tally. From there, the Warriors’ defense handled every ball in the field, turning double plays and corralling fly balls to maintain the slim margin. With the victory, Nipmuc improves to 7–5 on the season. Tomorrow at 3:30 PM, the Warriors return home to face the Douglas Tigers, riding two straight wins, including a 13–6 victory over Assabet Valley RVT. While Douglas has shown offensive firepower, Nipmuc’s pitching depth and small-ball approach at home should give the Warriors the edge. Fans can catch the action at Nipmuc High School as the Warriors pursue their eighth win.
