MILFORD — Supporters of the Milford Skate Park Project are continuing their efforts to bring a permanent skate park to town, creating what organizers describe as a safe, inclusive space for local youth and action sports enthusiasts.

The project, led by Friends of the Milford MA Skatepark, aims to build an approximately 18,800-square-foot skate park designed for skateboarders, BMX riders, scooter users, rollerbladers and other riders. According to project organizers, the facility would serve as a year-round recreational destination and could attract tens of thousands of visits annually. The skate park itself is expected to be funded through town and grant funding, while community fundraising efforts are focused on additional amenities such as benches, shade structures, bike racks and water fountains. Organizers are currently seeking to raise $150,000 for those features.

Advocates say the project addresses a longstanding need within the Milford community by providing a dedicated location for participants who currently lack a safe place to practice their sport.

“There’s a large group of skaters, BMX riders, scooter kids and rollerbladers that don’t have a place to enjoy their activity,” said project president Tom Stearns during a recent interview with MyFM 101.3. “There’s a saying that when your town doesn’t have a skate park, your town is the skate park. So we’re looking for a safe place for everyone to go, practice their craft safely and build the community.”

Stearns, who has been skateboarding for more than 40 years, emphasized the social and health benefits a skate park can provide.

“I know that the group of people is a true community, and it helps everybody get together, spend time together and be physically active,” Stearns said. “That helps support mental wellness and physical wellness as well. We’ve got a lot of citizens here that deserve a place to go and practice their craft.”

Organizers say the project has been built through community involvement, bringing together parents, volunteers, local residents and action sports participants with the goal of creating a lasting recreational asset for Milford. Supporters hope the facility will provide a positive outlet for youth while fostering community connections for generations to come.
