The Hopkinton boys’ soccer team opened its season against Dedham High School after a couple of weeks of getting back into soccer shape, and the Hillers prevailed in a tight 1-0 victory. Hopkinton scored in the first half and then defended that advantage, holding Dedham to zero goals while showcasing impressive defensive possessions and rotations that frustrated their opponent for the remainder of the match.
Last season was a mixed bag for Hopkinton, which finished 5-10-3 overall and 5-7-3 in Tri-Valley play, squeaking into the postseason as the No. 31 seed in the D2 bracket. The Hillers won their opening-round game against Southeastern RVT 2-0 before being handled by the No. 2 seed Mansfield, 5-0. That run demonstrated the team’s ability to compete but also the work that remains.
Opening the new season with a clean-sheet win is precisely the positive start Hopkinton wanted. The Hillers now have an opportunity to improve to 2-0 this afternoon at 4 PM when they travel to Holliston. A strong start in non-league and early-season tests will be important as Hopkinton looks to climb the table and build on last year’s playoff appearance.
