Milford Students Experience Spanish Culture Through Cooking

MILFORD – Students at Stacy Middle School recently took their Spanish studies beyond the classroom and into the kitchen for a hands-on cultural experience.

Thanks to a grant from the Milford Cultural Council, world language teachers Maria Calvillo and Holly Davoren brought 41 students to Third Space Kitchen for a special cooking event. There, students worked alongside chefs to prepare traditional Spanish dishes like paella and empanadas—all while receiving instructions in Spanish and enjoying authentic music.

After preparing the meal, students gathered to enjoy their creations together, finishing with flan and churros for dessert.

Educators say the experience helped students connect more deeply with Spanish culture, whether they were heritage speakers or learning the language for the first time. By sharing in the preparation and enjoyment of the meal, students built connections, sparked curiosity, and gained a greater appreciation for the traditions behind the language.
