HOPEDALE – Hopedale native Alex Johnson is pursuing his music career from Las Vegas as the frontman of Half Past Youth, a band bringing a 2000s-inspired pop-punk sound to its music.

Johnson began playing drums at age six before picking up guitar at 15 and eventually learning to sing. Half Past Youth formed through VAMPR, a music networking app that connects musicians. The band is based in Phoenix, while Johnson lives in Las Vegas and travels to meet with his bandmates.

The band recently released its debut single, “Love Letter,” along with a music video filmed in Tempe, Arizona. Johnson said the video was built around nostalgic scenes and took approximately 14 hours to shoot.

Johnson moved from Massachusetts to Las Vegas with his girlfriend to pursue his music career, a trip that took 52 hours over three days.

Looking ahead, Half Past Youth plans to release its second song, “Polaroids,” in November, along with a visual for the song.

“I think it’s something really special to share with everyone,” Johnson said.
