Swan Dale Cemetery
Mendon, MA 01756

Please join us on May 18 at Swan Dale Cemetery for a hands-on workshop showcasing techniques and teaching us cleaning and repair methods. We expect the day-long workshop to run from about 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. If you would like to stay for the day, please feel free to bring your own lunch and join us. Will have bathroom facilities available.

Our session will begin with a presentation on cleaning techniques. Our team will have some supplies available including some D2 biological stone cleaner, but if you would like to try your hand at cleaning your family stone or that of one of your loved ones, feel free to bring a few supplies of your own like soft bristle brushes, plastic scrapers(1 – 1.5″ plastic putty knives), gloves, and a hand sprayer bottle.

The 2nd part of the workshop will showcase stone repair and resetting techniques. Betty and Carlo Mencucci will be bringing their tripod and other supplies to demonstrate their work.

Betty and Carlo Mencucci are members of the Association for Gravestone Studies and have won the Oakley Award for their work in 2016. Betty and Carlo volunteer for the Burrillville Historical & Preservation Society working tirelessly to conserve Burrillville’s abandoned cemeteries. They have conserved 45 of the town’s 130 cemeteries, which means they have cleaned, repaired and reset every stone in each of the 45 cemeteries. They have many years of experience and have worked in cemeteries all over the state of Rhode Island as well as in Dudley, Mendon, and Swansea, Massachusetts and cemeteries in Groton, CT. Betty is the president of the Burrillville Historical & Preservation Society and a member of the Rhode Island Historical Cemetery Commission.

Please RSVP by May 12 so that we can make adequate preparations and indicate if you would like to join for a 1/2 day or a full day. We look forward to seeing many of you to learn about these processes along with us.
