George Joseph McBride Jr., 92, of Hopkinton
1934 - 2026

George was a lifelong Hopkinton resident. He built his family home and raised his five children there. In his younger years, he served as a volunteer firefighter for the Town of Hopkinton, eventually attaining the rank of lieutenant. He also owned and operated McBride’s Bottled Gas for many years, delivering propane throughout the community and making handmade Christmas ornaments for customers each year.

Family and friends were central to George’s life. He enjoyed gatherings around the dinner table, including the annual Easter feast, a tradition that had been part of his family for more than a century. He was also an accomplished cook and woodworker and enjoyed boating, beekeeping, candle making, raising farm animals, traveling, reading, grilling, and spending time at his second home in Wells, Maine.

George was known for his generosity and willingness to help others. He often went out of his way to assist customers, friends, and neighbors, whether by helping with a project or making sure someone had what they needed.

He was also a longtime football fan and was the first of several McBrides to captain the Hopkinton High School football team. He remained a devoted fan of the Patriots and enjoyed watching games with his family.

George is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; his children, June Johnson and her husband, Keith, of Worcester; George Joseph McBride III and his wife, Awn, of Thailand; Daniel McBride and his wife, Janet, of Pennsylvania; Denise Hildreth and her husband, Michael, of Hopkinton; and Colin McBride and his wife, Whitney, of Reading. He also leaves 15 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his siblings, June, John, and Michael McBride.
