Michael A. Ellslager, 76, of Westborough
1949 - 2026

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, on November 12th, 1949, Michael was the son of the late William and Grace Ellslager. He attended Allegheny College, earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in business.

Michael proudly served in the U.S. Navy, entering active duty in 1971 and serving as a lieutenant in intelligence. His service included time aboard the USS Roosevelt and with Attack Squadron 174 at Naval Air Station Cecil Field in Florida. He received the National Defense Service Medal and Meritorious Unit Citation before being honorably separated from active duty in 1977 and transferring to the Naval Reserve.

Following his military service, Michael worked in the trucking industry as a terminal manager. Later in life, he found particular fulfillment working for Beacon Mobility, where he spent the past 10 years driving a bus route for children with special needs. He formed a special bond with the children he transported, affectionately calling them “his kids.”

Family was at the center of Michael’s life. After marrying his wife, Sandy Thomas, he took her surname and became known to many as James Thomas. He was devoted to Sandy and took pride in caring for their home and family. He also loved talking about his children and following their accomplishments. His dogs, including German Shepherds Calypso, Cadence, and Nobska, were beloved members of the family.

Michael enjoyed listening to Journey and Stevie Nicks, remained a devoted Cleveland Browns fan, and had a particular love for Miatas, owning several over nearly three decades. To him, the car represented freedom.

Michael leaves behind his wife, Sandy Thomas; his children, Paul Ellslager and his wife, Victoria; Kenneth Ellslager and his fiancé, Ariane Cucchi; Damien Ellslager and his wife, Erin; and Damalyn Ellslager-Matthews and her husband, Mo Matthews. He also leaves 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Michael will be remembered by those who knew him as Michael, James, Pops, Grandpa, and by the children he transported who affectionately knew him as the driver of their “party van.” He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A graveside service with Military Honors will be held Friday, October 9th, at 11:00 AM in the Veterans Grove Section of Pine Grove Cemetery, located at 106 South Street in Westborough.
