Born on October 12th, 1953, in Fall River, Dottie was the daughter of Walter and Dorothea Hordern. She graduated from North Adams State College in 1975 with a degree in Biology. Dottie worked in the laboratory at Leonard Morse Hospital in Natick for more than 15 years before spending nearly 20 years at Milford Hospital. Throughout her career, she continued her education and earned certifications in multiple areas of laboratory work, always eager to learn more.
Dottie enjoyed reading, continuing her education, crafting, cooking, and cross-stitching. She loved spending time with her family, including large Christmas gatherings and vacations on Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod. She was also a devoted Neil Diamond fan and enjoyed watching Perry Mason, Murder She Wrote, and Little House on the Prairie.
Above all, Dottie treasured her family. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Christopher S. Maeder; her daughter, Melissa Maeder-Sweatman and her husband, Matthew Sweatman; her son, Scott Maeder, and his wife, Lauren Marchand; and her three grandchildren, Alexis Maeder, Trevor Maeder, and Jenna Sweatman, who affectionately called her Nana.
She is also survived by Nancy Nevin of Edgartown; Ricky Hordern and his wife, Doreen, of Rehoboth; Marietta Strickland of Somerset; Gregory Hordern and his wife, Cheryl, of Swansea; Walter Hordern and his wife, Karen, of Somerset; Bobby Hordern of Clearwater, Florida; and brother-in-law Bruce Maeder and his wife, Sandra, of Pompano Beach, Florida, along with many nieces and nephews.
Dottie was predeceased by her parents, Walter and Dorothea Hordern, and her beloved Aunt Jess.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, September 23rd from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Buma-Sargeant Funeral Home, located at 42 Congress Street in Milford.
A celebration of Dottie’s life will be held on Thursday, September 24th at 11:00 AM at the funeral home. Family and friends are invited to gather, share stories, laugh through cherished memories, and celebrate her life.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the West Dennis Public Library, located at 260 Main Street in West Dennis, MA, in celebration of Dottie’s life and the love she shared so freely.
