UXBRIDGE — Uxbridge High School field hockey enters the 2026 season with a championship standard few programs anywhere can match, but head coach Kelly Rosborough says the first message to her players will be simple: what happened in the past stays in the past.
Uxbridge has won five consecutive state championships, losing just three games over that span, and completed an undefeated season last year. Despite that success, Rosborough said the program treats every new season as a complete reset.
“We know we reset every season,” Rosborough said during an interview on MyFM 101.3. “Whatever’s happened in the past has happened in the past. We’re no longer state champions.”
Official practices begin Monday, Aug. 24, with the team scheduled to scrimmage Moses Brown and Lincoln-Sudbury before opening the regular season at East Greenwich in Rhode Island on Labor Day.
Rosborough said one of the biggest strengths of the program continues to be the depth of field hockey participation throughout Uxbridge. The town’s middle school program and youth field hockey league have helped create a pipeline of players who grow up around the varsity program and understand its expectations.
She said Uxbridge currently has roughly 20 players in grades six and seven competing at the middle school level, while another 34 players in grades eight through 12 are participating at the high school level.
That continuity has also created a unique situation within the program. Because Uxbridge High School includes eighth graders, Rosborough said the school recently graduated a class that had been part of all five consecutive state championship seasons.
This year’s senior class is also unusually large, with 11 seniors expected to lead the team.
“I’m really excited to see that amount of seniors and see where they develop as the season goes on and their leadership,” Rosborough said. “This is their opportunity, their year.”
Before roster and starting decisions are made, players will go through a series of fitness and evaluation drills during the opening week. Rosborough said that includes a timed mile, 300-yard shuttle tests and 7-on-7 scrimmages.
The coaching staff will use those sessions to evaluate conditioning, grit, communication, skill and overall field hockey IQ. Rosborough said the staff also compares returning players’ fitness results with their numbers from previous seasons to measure offseason improvement.
Uxbridge typically spends much of the opening week practicing together as one program, with players from grades eight through 12 working alongside one another before varsity and junior varsity rosters are finalized.
“We’re together, we ride the bus together, we’re in the season together, we support each other in games,” Rosborough said. “So it’s important that we come together as a full team in the beginning of the week.”
Rosborough said she does not force the same exact identity onto every team. Instead, the staff adjusts to the strengths and personality of each group while maintaining the program’s core expectations of hard work, development and team play.
For 2026, she said the focus goes beyond simply chasing a sixth consecutive championship.
“I just want them and us together to embrace the process,” Rosborough said. “We’re just looking to make those gains every week and just stay focused, work hard and know that we’re all playing for a common goal.”
The program will once again enter the season with strong support from the Uxbridge community, something Rosborough said has become an important part of the team’s success. She pointed to support from families, school administrators, the athletic department, booster club and local fans who regularly turn out for games.
“We just feel the school district, our principal, our athletic director, everyone is just so supportive, so involved,” Rosborough said. “We’re just really, really lucky to be in a great place where they feel the love and they’re proud of us.”
Uxbridge begins official practices Monday before opening the regular season on Labor Day at East Greenwich.
