WESTBOROUGH – A fourth community could join a proposed regional emergency communications center that would consolidate 911 and dispatch services.

Northborough is reportedly considering joining Westborough, Grafton and Southborough in the proposed Regional Emergency Communications Center, or RECC, which would operate out of the Harvey Building in Westborough.

Regionalizing emergency communications can potentially reduce costs by allowing communities to share staffing, equipment and other resources. However, the proposal has also raised concerns about its impact on existing local dispatchers, including the possibility of job losses.

There are also concerns that dispatchers working from a centralized facility could have less familiarity with individual neighborhoods, roads and landmarks than dispatchers currently working within their own communities.
