MEDWAY – Medway Police are continuing their Ride Smart Medway campaign with a reminder to parents and young riders that not everything advertised as an “e-bike” is legally considered a bicycle in Massachusetts.

The department’s ongoing social media campaign is designed to educate families about the growing popularity of e-bikes and other motorized devices while explaining the laws and safety requirements that come with them.

Police are encouraging families to research a bike before purchasing it, including checking its maximum speed and motor power and determining whether it has operable pedals and is designed for use on public roads.

Riders and parents should also understand whether a particular device requires a driver’s license, registration or helmet. Police say knowing exactly what type of bike or motorized device you are riding is an important first step toward using it legally and safely.
