FRANKLIN — One of the most anticipated games of the American Legion Baseball season will finally be played today as top-seeded Franklin Post 75 hosts second-seeded Hyde Park in the District 6 Championship after Tuesday night’s game was postponed because of rain.
The delay only adds to the anticipation surrounding a matchup between the district’s two best teams. Franklin enters the championship with a perfect 17-0 record, while Hyde Park brings a 15-3 mark into the winner-take-all contest.
With no second chances, today’s game will determine the District 6 champion and the district’s lone representative in the Massachusetts American Legion Baseball State Tournament. The winner will keep its season alive and advance to the state tournament at Fino Field in Milford, while the losing team’s summer will come to a heartbreaking end.
Franklin has put together a dominant campaign behind outstanding pitching, timely hitting, and consistent defense, remaining unbeaten throughout the district schedule. Hyde Park has proven to be one of the state’s top teams as well, losing just three times all season to earn the No. 2 seed and a chance to challenge Franklin for the title.
The stakes are even higher knowing the winner will open state tournament play on Saturday at 7:30 p.m., taking on host Milford Post 59 in the final game of opening day at Fino Field.
After one extra day of waiting because of the weather, two of Massachusetts’ best American Legion teams will finally take the field with a district championship, a state tournament berth, and the continuation of their seasons all on the line.
