NATICK — Registration is now open for one of MetroWest’s largest and most impactful road races, as the 27th Annual Flutie 5K for Autism prepares to return to Memorial Field at Natick High School this October.
Hosted by the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism, the annual event has grown into the organization’s flagship fundraiser, bringing together thousands of runners, walkers, families, and community members in support of autism programs across Massachusetts and beyond.
Development Manager Joe Katusich said the race has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 2000.
“This is our flagship 5K for Autism event,” Katusich said. “This is our 27th annual race, and it’s definitely our largest. We expect to raise more than $500,000 for the third consecutive year.”
Just a few years ago, the event raised approximately $100,000 annually. That dramatic growth has allowed the foundation to expand its impact while supporting other local organizations serving individuals with autism.
A key part of that success has been the race’s charity partner program, which was introduced following the COVID-19 pandemic. Local nonprofit organizations can recruit participants to the race, who then have the option of fundraising for either the Flutie Foundation or one of its affiliated autism-serving charities.
“Our charity partners have walked away each year with anywhere from a few hundred dollars to as much as $40,000 in grants,” Katusich said. “It’s a great way to spread the wealth throughout the autism community.”
The event also emphasizes inclusion, giving individuals of all abilities an opportunity to participate.
“It’s an opportunity for anyone of any ability to come and participate in a 5K,” Katusich said. “That’s not always available for members of the autism community, so creating that welcoming environment is a huge part of what makes this event special.”
Registration is officially open, and organizers are encouraging participants to sign up early. Runners who register by July 20th will receive 20% off through the event’s early bird promotion.
Katusich noted that the race sold out last year and organizers expect more than 2,000 participants this fall. Because Memorial Field has a limited capacity, registering early is the best way to guarantee a spot, as well as receive the official race shirt and finisher’s medal.
“We have a lot of loyal supporters, especially from Natick, who ask us every year when registration opens,” Katusich said. “Our early bird pricing is our way of thanking them for continuing to support the event.”
Proceeds from the Flutie 5K benefit the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism, helping fund programs, services, equipment, and organizations that improve the quality of life for individuals and families affected by autism.
With another sold-out event anticipated, organizers are encouraging runners, walkers, families, and community members to register soon and be part of one of MetroWest’s signature fall traditions while supporting an important cause.
