Nancy was a woman of remarkable character, known for her unique blend of elegance and earthiness. A free spirit grounded by a deep faith and respect for tradition, she had a gift for finding beauty in the unconventional and a special appreciation for quirky, colorful people. Her sharp Irish wit carried her through life’s joys and challenges alike, bringing laughter and perspective to those around her. Above all else, Nancy was profoundly human—compassionate, authentic, and deeply connected to those she loved.
Born in Boston, she was the daughter of the late Eustace and Ann (Crowley) Scannell. She was the cherished wife of Mark J. Flaherty Jr., who passed away on June 11, 2007.
Nancy is survived by her three devoted daughters: Deirdre Flaherty; Susan DiPalma and her husband, David; and Anne Mermelstein and her husband, Josh. She was a loving and proud grandmother to Katie, Becca, Vince, Celia, and Mark, all of whom brought immense joy to her life.
She also leaves behind her brothers, Paul Scannell and his wife Gail, and Charlie Scannell; her sister-in-law Marlin; her step-sisters Maria Scannell, Natalie Scannell, and Stacey Roh; and her step-brothers Dan Scannell and his wife Joeng, Edwin Scannell, and David Scannell. She was predeceased by Mary and Joe Pomarole, as well as her brothers Michael Scannell and his wife Yvette, Frank Scannell, and Marty Scannell.
Nancy’s warmth, humor, faith, and unwavering love for family and friends will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her.
