Milford Voters to Decide on Eminent Domain at Special Town Meeting

MILFORD — Should the Town of Milford be able to use eminent domain to acquire a property it has been unable to purchase through negotiations? That question is the sole article on the warrant for tonight’s Milford Special Town Meeting.

The property in question is located on Park Terrace, directly behind the Milford Police Station and between several parcels already owned by the Town. Officials say the home has been on the market since last summer and that the Town has made unsuccessful attempts to buy it.

Under the proposal, Milford would use eminent domain to take control of the property, a process that forces a sale but still requires the Town to compensate the owner at what officials describe as “fair market value.” The Select Board says the land is needed for municipal purposes tied to the police station and that the matter is urgent enough to warrant a Special Town Meeting rather than waiting until the Annual Town Meeting in May.

Voters will decide tonight whether to authorize the Town to move forward with the eminent domain process.
