Nipmuc’s girls basketball produced an early offensive surge and never looked back in a 49-28 victory over Leicester. The Warriors exploded for a 24-9 first quarter that built separation, then played a steady final three quarters, outscoring the Wolverines 24-19 across that stretch.
Maddie Fernandes led Nipmuc with 18 points while Savannah Carr added 13, a two-player tandem that outscored Leicester 31-28 by itself. The Warriors’ fast start forced Leicester to chase the game, and Nipmuc’s defensive consistency limited second-chance looks and transition opportunities.
The win improves Nipmuc to 6-7 and stops a slide in which the Warriors had lost three of four. It also sets up a major test tomorrow at undefeated Douglas (6:30 p.m.), a matchup that will challenge Nipmuc’s ability to handle a deep, fast, and disciplined opponent.
If Fernandes and Carr can sustain their scoring and teammates provide timely support, Nipmuc will have a chance to move back toward .500 against one of the state’s best early-season squads. Bench production and ball security will be critical in that road test.
