The Nipmuc softball team moved into the Round of 16 after a 4-2 victory over Wilmington in the Round of 32. The No. 5 Warriors got a gem from ace Charlotte Leitch, who went all seven innings and struck out 11 while allowing no earned runs. Wilmington scored twice on walks and defensive miscues but never mounted a sustained rally against Leitch’s command. On offense, a three-run second inning gave Nipmuc early control over Wilmington. Wilmington scratched back with two runs, but Nipmuc extended its lead with two RBIs from Quinn Gemmel later in the game. The Warriors scored when they needed to and prevented runs from coming across the plate, like any real contender would do. Defensively, the infield turned several key ground-ball plays, and the outfield stayed clean, preserving Nipmuc’s advantage. Next up, Nipmuc (15-6) faces No. 12 Tri-County, which advanced via an 8-7 win over Auburn. Tri-County’s potent lineup will test Nipmuc’s pitching depth and defensive intensity. Nipmuc’s ability to manufacture runs and execute in late innings gives them confidence as they aim to reach the quarterfinals. First pitch is today, with a spot in the Round of 8 on the line.
