The Hopedale Blue Raiders girls’ softball team suffered a narrow 5–4 defeat at the hands of the Millbury Woolies last Friday afternoon. Millbury, now 6–6 on the season, came into the game battle-tested, having faced top programs like Tantasqua, Uxbridge, and Nipmuc. After seven innings, the score was knotted at 4–4, a testament to both teams’ tenacity and defensive prowess. In the top of the eighth inning, Millbury’s Valeria Allain delivered the decisive blow, driving in the go-ahead run with a single that snuck past the infield for the game’s final tally. Hopedale’s final at-bats fell short, and the Woolies left the field victorious. Despite the loss, Hopedale showcased standout performances. Emily Atwood was dominant on the mound, tossing eight innings of work and striking out 16 batters while allowing just six hits. Her ability to miss bats kept the Raiders in contention until the final frame. At the plate, Delaney Vaillette provided offensive spark with two extra-base hits and an RBI, illustrating the lineup’s ability to generate key run-scoring opportunities. Hopedale improved to 8–3 but will look to regroup quickly. Tomorrow at 3:30 PM, the Blue Raiders travel to face the struggling Blackstone-Millville Chargers, who enter at 1–11. Against a team that has struggled to produce offense, Hopedale’s proven pitching and timely hitting should translate into a confidence-boosting win, and provide a chance to bounce back from last week’s tough loss.
